O artigo analisa a importância da previdência social rural na dinâmica da agricultura familiar gaúcha. Aborda os efeitos do processo de universalização da seguridade social em face das mudanças decorrentes da promulgação da nova constituição de 1988. O estudo desenvolveu-se com base em pesquisa realizada em quatro áreas de estudo correspondentes às microrregiões de Pelotas, Caxias do Sul, Frederico Westphalen e Cerro Largo, respectivamente situadas no sul, nordeste, norte e noroeste da geografia gaúcha. Os resultados indicam que as aposentadorias e pensões são essencialmente importantes na perspectiva da redução das desigualdades. In the 1990ies the ultimate target of social security has been widened: Social security aims at protecting people against life risks and helping them to take advantage of social and economic opportunities. Existing social security systems in rural areas of developing countries are often “second best solutions” and need reforms. Institutional innovations such as micro insurance schemes are a promising way of improving the risk management of rural households. Land-losing Farmers’ Citizenization in the Process of Urbanization AgEcon

Starting from the status of citizenization of land-losing farmers, problems in the citizenization are analyzed, such as the difficulty in land-losing farmers’ economic life after turning into citizens, employment difficulties of land-losing farmers after living in the city, and the prominent problems in social security of land-losing farmers. Based on the survey of peasants from 40 households who are chosen at random and have lost their land in the Hedong Village of Liuzhou, the status quo of land expropriation and social security of land-losing peasants are expounded.
